China for Kids: Audio Stories, Culture, Printables & Recipes

Travel across China with Jia, a young travel writer

Meet Jia, an 8-year-old on her way to becoming a great travel writer. In four original audio stories, your family will help save the Lunar New Year celebration in her grandparents’ village, follow a spy around Beijing, search for a lost baby panda in the mountains and camp at the Great Wall of China. Each story is about 30 minutes and made for kids ages 5–11. This China country set also includes 9 printables, two recipes and a full country guide.

The Patchwork Dragon

Jia is an 8-year-old on a mission — to find beauty in every place she goes and to tell the world about it. When Jia and her parents visit her grandparents in their small Chinese village for the New Year holiday, disaster strikes. Will Jia be able to restore one of the town’s oldest and most beautiful New Year traditions?

The Beijing Spy Hunt

Jia is always looking for a good story for her newsletter, and when she spots a spy outside her window, she makes it her mission to learn everything she can. However, after following the stranger around Beijing, Jia is truly shocked when she learns the spy’s true identity.

The Wall Watcher

Jia goes on an exciting camping trip with her parents to the Great Wall of China. She meets new people, learns a lot about one of the most famous sites in the world and is confronted by something she’s never experienced before — true magic.

Return of the Panda

When Jia and her classmates visit the mountains in search of pandas, Jia gets lost. But what she ends up discovering in the wilderness was far beyond her highest hopes!

Exploring China

China stretches from the Gobi Desert in the north to tropical beaches in the south, with the Himalayas to the southwest and its capital, Beijing, near the Great Wall. This part of the country guide explores Chinese geography with maps, the Chinese zodiac, kind and lucky Chinese dragons, how Chinese characters work, and the Great Wall. Kids can also sketch and color a giant panda in pastel with art teacher Susan Garrison, in a lesson made just for Around the World Stories.

Did you know? Much of the Great Wall was held together with a surprising ingredient: sticky rice. And no, you can’t see it from the moon.

Chinese traditions for kids

Learn the graceful ritual of serving Chinese tea, the polite rules for giving a gift in China (why you offer it with two hands, and why eight is a lucky number), and how to use chopsticks. Then test your skills with a printable chopstick challenge!

Did you know? Chinese dragons are kind and bring good luck, which is why dragon dances are a Lunar New Year tradition.
