France for Kids: Audio Stories, Culture, Printables & Recipes

Discover France through the eyes of Lacey, a young artist

Lacey sees beauty where others don’t, whether it’s a forgotten patch of lavender on her family’s farm in Provence or a stray dog on the streets of Paris. In four original audio stories, your family will help Lacey save the lavender, outrun Paris’s most determined dog catcher, step inside the paintings at the Musée d’Orsay and bring a magical Bastille Day to her small town. Each story is about 30 minutes and made for kids ages 5–11. This France country set also includes 9 printables, two recipes and a full country guide.

The Forgotten Lavender

Lacey loves living in southern France, and one of her favorite things about it is the lavender fields in the summer. That’s why she just won’t accept that a small patch of her parents’ lavender field is being discarded, all because it isn’t as purple or fragrant as the rest of the field. Meanwhile, Lacey’s older brother has his own challenge – competing against Silver Eye DuBois in the town’s Pétanque tournament.

The Lost Friend

Lacey and her family arrive in Paris for a few days of sightseeing and fun. When Lacey discovers a stray dog, she makes it her mission to return him to the street artist who takes care of him. But first she has to deal with a determined dog catcher, greedy pigeons, a river, and lots and lots of steps. Along the way Lacey also sees some of the most incredible sights of Paris.

The D’Orsay Adventure

Lacey had been looking forward to visiting the Museum d’Orsay in Paris, which holds a large collection of French Impressionist paintings. It’s just another rainy day in the museum until Lacey’s mother disappears. In fact, everyone in the museum disappears, and Lacey realizes that the museum is closed and she’s been locked inside for the night. It’s not long before she realizes that she’s not alone in the museum — not by a long shot.

A Magical Bastille Day

Bastille Day is coming up, and Lacey wants to bring a bit of the grand Paris-style celebrations to her town in Southern France. But there’s no way for the small town of Sault to compete with a world-class firework display at the Eiffel Tower and an enormous parade down the Champs-Élysées. When Lacey meets a magician who is visiting from Sweden, she sees a chance at giving her town something really special. But in the end, will his big trick measure up and give the town something to remember?

Exploring France

Learn what the colors of the French flag mean, explore French geography with maps, find out what Bastille Day really celebrates and discover why the Eiffel Tower was almost taken down. This part of the country guide also visits the lavender fields of Provence and teaches pétanque, the game you’ll see in French village squares.

Did you know? When the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889, the plan was to take it down after 20 years.

French art for kids

Meet the Impressionists: Edgar Degas and his ballerinas, Claude Monet and his garden at Giverny, and the painting that gave Impressionism its name. Kids can draw a Degas ballerina in chalk pastel with art teacher Susan Garrison, in a lesson made just for Around the World Stories, then look closely at famous paintings with questions to talk about together.

Did you know? The word Impressionism came from an art critic who didn’t like Monet’s painting Impression, Sunrise.

“Between the language, the music, and the storytelling, the Around the World curriculum creates an atmosphere that feels more like traveling than ‘doing geography.’”
