Netherlands for Kids: Audio Stories, Culture, Printables & Recipes

Explore the Netherlands with Jasper

Jasper is an 8-year-old from Amsterdam who loves animals and keeps a few in his room. He’s only trying to have fun, but fun has a way of turning into trouble. In four original audio stories, your family will help him catch the rabbit eating his dad’s prize tulips, rescue his mom’s entry in a stroopwafel baking contest and spend King’s Day with two real princesses. Each story is about 30 minutes and made for kids ages 5–11. This Netherlands country set also includes 8 printables, two recipes and a full country guide.

The Tulip Thief

Jasper, an 8-year-old Dutch boy from the city of Amsterdam, loves animals and insects — and even keeps them in his room. When Jasper’s father complains of a rabbit eating his prize tulips, Jasper becomes intent on finding the cuddly animal and protecting it from the ‘bunny police’. Jasper secretly rescues the bunny from being stuck in a fence, but then has to decide what to do with him — after all, his room is getting a bit crowded.

The Secret Ingredient

Jasper’s mother is competing for the first time in the Dutch stroopwafel baking contest, but when she accidentally spills all her batter, Jasper is left racing around town to collect more ingredients. He’s determined to help his mother win but ends up finding something no one ever expected.

King’s Day: Part 1

Jasper’s Saturday morning started out pretty normal with a soccer game in the park with friends. But his day takes an unexpected turn when he rescues a mysterious girl from falling in the playground and is rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime invitation to spend the day with the Dutch royal family — on King’s Day no less! But Jasper is also put in a difficult situation during a game of hide and seek with the princess. Will he get out of it?

King’s Day: Part 2

Jasper was interested in spending the day inside the King’s home, while the princesses wanted to see what King’s Day would be like for normal Dutch people. Jasper uses his favor with the King to allow the princesses to join him on the streets of Amsterdam and take part in the annual Orange Madness celebrations. But what happens when their disguises fail, and the princesses are left running from the crowds? Someone will have to act fast to get the princesses safely home.

Exploring the Netherlands

Find out why the Netherlands has more bikes than people, how windmills and canals keep the low-lying land dry, and why the whole country turns orange on King’s Day. This part of the country guide also covers Tulipmania, Dutch birthday traditions, koekhappen (a Dutch party game), chocolate sprinkles on breakfast toast and a family cheese tasting.

Did you know? The Netherlands sends two-thirds of the world’s fresh-cut flowers, plants and bulbs to other countries.

Dutch art for kids

Kids can color Van Gogh’s bedroom in their own favorite colors and draw and paint tulips with art teacher Susan Garrison, in a lesson made just for Around the World Stories.

Did you know? Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime.
